An enigma of evolution Originating 125 million years ago 

 Since Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) assisted in the sequencing of the first plant genome,,,

 plant genomics has advanced significantly.  

 However, creating the ideal crop is still mostly a lottery.  

 It is not always possible to get the desired crop features by creating the same DNA mutation in two separate plants.  

 Why not, is the question. Plant biologists at CSHL have discovered a cause.  

 Zachary Lippman, an HHMI Investigator and professor, and his colleagues have found that the same gene can be controlled by ,,,

 radically different regulatory mechanisms in tomato and Arabidopsis thaliana plants.  

 Amazingly, they connected this behavior to drastic genetic changes that transpired during 125 million years of evolutionary history.
