Jets Release $40 Million Starter Ahead of Free Agency: ‘I’m Surprised’

The New York Jets' first significant domino has fallen during the offseason of 2024.

ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler said on Twitter that "The Jets are releasing guard Laken Tomlinson."On social media, SNY's Connor Hughes said, "I'm surprised."

"Performance wasn't what they'd hoped for, which is astonishing when you think about it, but I felt he'd improve dramatically by stabilizing those around him.

Not to mention that he was constantly available, which was unusual at Jet. Hughes explained on social media that this is now another hole that needs to be filled.

"I'm not sure Jets fans understand how difficult it will be to find a new LT, LG, RT, or RG (pending AVT), as well as depth for AVT (can't rely on health) in one offseason.

The Jets have not found all of those pieces in the last five seasons. "I'd be concerned, especially since this is a do-or-die year."

In 2022, the Jets went all-in on free agency. Gang Green went to the top of the market and spent $40 million to sign Tomlinson away from the San Francisco 49ers.

The Jets wanted Tomlinson's transfer to be as seamless as possible. After signing Laken, Gang Green moved its young promising offensive lineman, Alijah Vera-Tucker, from left guard to right guard.
