The bond between humans and dogs is special, making them the most popular pets in the U.S. with 49 million households owning one or more, per the U.S. Census Bureau. 

Recent data shows that certain dog breeds are more popular in different states, with the Golden Retriever leading in Ohio, as reported by U.S. News & World Report. 

Analysis of 811,798 data points from a third-party pet insurance partner in fall 2023 determined breed popularity by state. 

Beyond Golden Retrievers, Ohio's top dog breeds include German Shepherds, Chihuahuas, Goldendoodles, and Yorkshire Terriers. 

Fourteen states, including Ohio, favor Golden Retrievers as the top breed, such as Colorado, Connecticut, and Illinois. 

Nationally, Chihuahuas and French Bulldogs are the most popular breeds in the U.S., followed by Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Shih Tzus. 

Golden Retrievers rank third overall in the U.S. for popularity among dog breeds. 

Other popular breeds in Ohio include German Shepherds, Chihuahuas, Goldendoodles, and Yorkshire Terriers.
